The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults Breast Cancer Scholarships

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults is committed to helping young adults (ages 15-39) continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one. Many scholarships offered by UCF share similar applicant criteria. Applicants need only submit one application, which will be considered for any and all scholarships for which the student is eligible for. The PinkRose Foundation Inc. strives to make education more affordable for students who have suffered the loss of a parent or legal guardian due to breast cancer. $1,000 scholarships are available to US or permanent residents who have graduated from high school. The deadline for application is August 31. Scholarship applications are available at www.pinkrose.org/scholarship.html. The Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Scholarship Program is available to students in El Dorado County, California whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer in their immediate family. The deadline for the $1,000 awards is usually in March.

The MaryEllen Locher Foundation offers a national breast cancer survivor scholarship to children who have suffered the loss of a parent to breast cancer or whose parent is a breast cancer survivor. The cancer scholarship may be awarded for up to four years to a student but must be reapplied for yearly. Scholarship amounts may vary. Applications must be received by January 15 every year to be eligible for the award.

The Ribbons of Life Breast Cancer Scholarship is for women currently living with breast cancer. The $500 scholarship is meant to help and encourage survivors to gain further education. Studies have shown that more educated individuals have a higher percentage of remission. This scholarship is one of the first to be offered to women currently living with breast cancer to encourage women to learn new skills to help themselves and their families. Students must be taking classes in Ventura County, California, but look for more such scholarships in your area.

There are also several foundations which award scholarships to students wanting to research breast cancer or pursue postgraduate education in the field. Some of these include The Australian National Breast Cancer Foundation which funds scholarships up to $30,000 per year for a maximum of three years. The application deadline is in late June or early July. The Cancer Research Society, Inc., The Cancer Research Foundation of America, and the Cancer Research Institute all also offer similar scholarships and links for these can be found on the FinAid website.

Individuals who have been impacted by breast cancer should also obviously apply for general cancer scholarships. Many of these are awarded and broken down by geographical location and some colleges are given money specifically for students who find themselves at a financial disadvantage due to debilitating illness of a caregiver, so students should specifically ask their high school counsellors or college financial aid office about monetary awards which fall in this category. All students should investigate federal grants and other general scholarships, as well as specific scholarships that pertain to personal circumstances, like those targeting students impacted by breast cancer.

There are many different disability scholarships for cancer survivors available to students who are currently living with some form of cancer, have been cured of the disease, or have fought it into remission. Such programs are available at multiple levels from national cancer disability scholarships to those offered on the regional or local level as well. Students who have lived through or are living with cancer should sincerely consider cancer survivor scholarships as they represent a good chance to get access to disability scholarship money. Programs that focus on kids growing up with cancer are generally focused on the strength shown by individuals as they fight the disease, in all hopes finally triumphing over it in the end. Applications to cancer survivor scholarships should highlight these struggles in in the best light they can.

The American Childhood Cancer Organization has many cancer survivor scholarships listed. There is a lot of information on where to apply to.

With the sheer amount of scholarships for cancer survivors available to students it should not be difficult for a student living with cancer to find a program which suits them. One such cancer disability scholarship comes from Cancer for College scholarship program. The Cancer for College scholarship provides at most $4,000 and at least $250 to those selected to receive an award. Based in California, students going to school in the state receive first priority in being considered for an award. However all students who are attending an accredited university may apply to the program. All applicants must be a United States citizen, be a current cancer patient or survivor and be attending school in the United States. Applications open every year in October and must be submitted by a deadline announced sometime before July.

Another cancer survivor scholarship comes from the Ryan Mullaly Second Chance Fund. This program provides $1,000 to a varying number of winners every year. In order to be eligible for this program students will need to be residents of the United States, be diagnosed with lymphoma during high school, have been involved in cancer therapy programs, currently be graduating from high school and be preparing to head off to an accredited two or four year college program. All application materials are due no later than May 31.

The Working Against Cancer group provides several disability scholarships for cancer survivors from $500 to $1,000. This cancer disability scholarship is awarded to California residents who are cancer survivors either currently in treatment or had previously gone through a therapy program. Applications are posted in May through June and all applicants must be under the age of 30 in order to be considered for the program.

Amongst the many different cancer survivor scholarships available to interested students, the Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation provides a program of its own. This cancer disability scholarship gives out a single $5,000 scholarship every year to a winning student, and unspecified smaller awards are given out to runner ups. Operating as an essay contest, the Andre Sobel program looks for students graduating from high school who have a story to share regarding their struggle with cancer. The essay topic revolves around what a cancer survivor looked for in others while they were living through their condition – how their relationships changed, what things helped them get through their struggle. Application materials for this program are due no later than April 29.

The Patty Feist Undergraduate Cancer Scholarship is for survivors of childhood cancer who will be attending the University of Colorado in Boulder. This cancer scholarship takes place in the spring every year so apply eary. You must go to the University of Colorado’s financial aid department to inquire and the deadline is March 1st. If you ‘ve survived cancer up until 21 years of age then you qualify to apply. There is a 1000 word essay and the award is $2,500 given out to 3 students who show a passion towards learning and a zeal about their goals. Not every disability scholarship for cancer can be covered in this article, but on a final note the Friends of Scott Scholarship program is worth mentioning. A varying number of handicapped scholarships will be awarded every year and in 2010 three winners were selected for scholarships which varied in amounts rewarded. Eligibility for this program revolves around being a cancer survivor or living through current treatment. All applicants must be enrolled in college and get a letter from their physician verifying their medical history. Applications must be received no later than May 1. The Morris Law Firm is the sponsor of this disability scholarship they are pleased to announce the Morris Law Firm #RobbyStrong Cancer Survivor Scholarship for the 2016 school year!

Dana Morris is a criminal defense lawyer in Panama City, Florida, who was inspired to create this scholarship by Robby, a courageous young friend of the Morris family, battling cancer. Robby was diagnosed in 2015 with a rare type of childhood cancer, DSCRT.

Dana, not only works on cases that are Florida felonies, he also has a niche in working on  students and out-of-towners who find themselves in trouble with the law while on spring break or vacation. He has experience as a juvenile prosecutor—and he’s a parent—so he has compassion for young offenders.

When the Dana Morris’ reached out to Robby’s parents to find out what they could do to help, Robby’s parents were directly plain spoken in saying, “Robby challenges everyone to do random acts of kindness in the name of #RobbyStrong around your community. Our family has been blessed by kindness in a big way, we want to share the love. Go out. Do good. Be RobbyStrong! – and let us know what you are up to.”

Morris Law Firm #RobbyStrong Cancer Survivor Scholarship Guidelines

This disability scholarship is judged and awarded on merit as well as need. Those who apply must be able to demonstrate merit and their need for this Morris Law Firm scholarship.

You are not required to summit recommendation letters and resumes to substantiate what is in your application; but it’s a very good idea if you do. You must summit your transcript with initial application but an un-opened copy of your official transcripts if you are selected as a finalist.

A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required which is reasonable.

You must attend a law school as of the 2016 fall semester.

Late and uncompleted applications will not be considered – must be submitted online by May 31st 2016. Once online there is a short application which is always welcomed for students who fill out many
online scholarship applications.

Inheritance of Hope is a faith-based organization which seeks to improve the lives of those families affected by a life-threatening disease, like cancer. One of the ways they do this is to offer a $1000 scholarship to a student living with a person diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, but they also provide links and information about a number of scholarships for cancer survivors and their families on their website. The Inheritance of Hope scholarship deadline is May 31, 2011 and applications may be submitted online now.

The Jackie Spellman Scholarship Foundation awards ten scholarships to students who have suffered from lymphoma or leukemia or whose sibling or parent has had the disease. These cancer scholarships are renewable for four years and range from $1,000-$3,000 dollars. The deadline for applying is April 15, 2011. Students must provide a doctor’s verification of the cancer, as well as demonstrate need for the scholarship in cancer. Eligibility also includes enrollment in a four-year college or university and a 3.0 minimum high school GPA.

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults offers a $2,500 scholarship for cancer survivors or the children of someone diagnosed or suffering from cancer. There are also several other links to related cancer scholarships on their website. The individual having suffered from cancer must have been at least 15 years old when diagnosed with the disease and recipients of the scholarship which is given out in parcels over two consecutive semesters, must agree to perform 80 hours of community service. On this website there are also links to scholarships available only to Maryland, DC and Virginia residents.

The Sean Silver Scholarship Fund is a national cancer survivor scholarship to a college student who is currently in treatment for their cancer. This cancer scholarship honors the memory of Sean Silver who sought to obtain his college degree while he was battling cancer. He did graduate but succumbed to the disease a year later, thrilled to know part of his legacy would be a scholarship to reward another student in his situation who was determined to pursue their dreams, even while fighting through treatments and side-effects of treatments in order to live. The deadline to apply to the scholarship for cancer survivors is April 1, 2011.

The National Collegiate Cancer Foundation offers a similar scholarship for students seeking to finish their education while in treatment for cancer and offers a $1,000 nonrenewable scholarship. The deadline for application is Oct. 1, 2011.

The American Cancer Society’s R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out to Cancer Kids) Cancer College Survivor Scholarship Program offers resident students of Florida scholarship money to pursue their education at a Florida higher education facility. This scholarship is up to $3,000 for tuition each year, dependent on credit hours taken and $300 yearly for textbooks. This is only one example of an American Cancer Society Scholarship. They fund numerous scholarships for different areas of the country and available for specific universities. To search for one applicable to you or your location, search American Cancer Society Scholarships on the internet or go to their webpage.

Another non-profit source for cancer-related scholarships is No Wooden Nickels through the Felton A. Childress, Sr. and Rhoda A. Wilson Scholarship funds. This group is made up of 100% volunteers and is dependent on donations, so the amount of money available for scholarships may vary from year to year. The Cancer Survivor’s Fund also offers a scholarship for cancer survivors that do not have to be currently undergoing treatment to be eligible. The deadline for 2011-2012 school year is February, but applications will be accepted beginning in February of 2012 for the upcoming year.

There are possibly hundreds of scholarships available to students battling with cancer treatments, children of cancer survivors, siblings of children diagnosed with cancer, etc. Many cancer scholarships are renewable for the duration of four years as long as requirements continue to be met, but there are even more non-renewable, one-time scholarships available that can eliminate thousands of dollars in educational tuition for college students. This list will get you started.
