There are graduate disability scholarships which aren’t as plentiful as regular undergraduate awards, and those can be hard to find.

BUT!

A good tip for graduate disability students is to look for any general disability scholarship and send an email to the scholarship sponsor to inquire if they allow graduate students to apply to their award.

Many of them do!

So, don’t hesitate to ask if you are matching up to the scholarship award being presented!

Many organizations tend to ‘tweek’ their qualifying requirements and you may then qualify to apply with a better chance of winning.

The very first place to look for disability scholarships for graduate students are the very same ones that disability UNDERGRADUATE students receive awards from. Many of them have programs for graduate students to apply to as well; or they are also for graduate students to apply to. For instance; The American Council of the Blind (ACB), the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), and the Blind Veterans Association (BVA), all have graduate disability scholarships for visually impaired graduate students ranging from $1,000 to $6,000 for those students who have a visual impairment.

AAHD Disabilities Scholarship Program for Graduate Students

The American Association on Health and Disability motto is “dedicated to improve overall health and reduce health disparities for people with disabilities through health promotion and wellness” They sponsor a scholarship program called the AAHD Frederick J. Krause Scholarship on Health & Disability.

This scholarship program is typically awarded on an annual basis to students who show promise in their academics; but suffer some form of disability.

Student who apply should either be going through an undergraduate program, or a graduate program in an accredited university. Students should also be pursuing an education in a course RELATED to health & disability, which can be anything from health promotion, public health, disability studies, disability research, rehabilitation engineering along with any other course that impacts on the lives of those with disabilities.

The scholarship award is no larger then $1,000, and is only awarded to students who are legal residents in the US, or those who have been enrolled in a US university that is accredited. It is important to note that when you apply for the AAHD scholarship, you are granting permission to AAHD in using your name, picture, or story for future use in reference materials they distribute. If this is not you would want, then students should not apply.

The Ability Center of Greater Toledo (ACT) runs a scholarship program in conjunction with other communities and partners who work to make sure that everyone has a shot at a good education. The Ability Center provides scholarships for college going students within the confines of the county, with $20,000 offered in scholarships, for disabled students who apply and are chosen. The Ability Center awards scholarships every year during the springtime.
To be eligible to win applicants you must be an individual with a disability and have a permanent address in Lucas, Wood, Fulton, Henry, Ottawa, Defiance, Williams county in Ohio,or in Monroe or Lenawee county in Michigan, along with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Rehabmart.com that are worth looking into because there are multiple awards given out yearly which increases the chances of winning. Rehabmart.com has established a $25,000 scholarship fund for students with disabilities, and for students pursuing a college degree in a health sciences/healthcare-related field, along with students pursuing special education degrees.

Rehabmart is owned and operated by Occupational and Physical Therapists who also happen to be parents of disabled children. They have designed their Scholarships to promote awareness to the cause of making higher education accessible for students living with disabilities. Rehabmart.com strongly feels that this is a way for them to give back, while at the same time showing their gratitude for the healthcare, health sciences and special education professions.

In 2016 there were 35 Rehabmart scholarship winners from a pool of 900 applicants who responded. This was the very first year that the scholarship was offered by Rehabmart.

Students can apply online for a chance to win from $250 to $2,500 by writing a short thoughtful essay about this question posted on their scholarship website page:

Axon Optics Migraine Story Scholarships for Disability

Axon Optics has a $1,000 disability scholarship for students affected in one way or another by migraine. Any full time student can apply too. To apply, applicants must submit an essay with no more then (300) words, OR a video less then one minute, OR an image such as a drawing or photograph, or similar: on answering ONE of these questions:

1) What is your migraine story?
2) What is your light sensitivity story?

This MUST be submitted on the applicants social media account!

ASAN Autistic Scholars Fellowship Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities

Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) is a non-profit organization run by and for Autistic people. It was started for the disability rights for the Autistic community. They work for Autistic public policy changes, cultural activities, information, education, and advocacy relevant Autistic projects.

Up to six students have a chance to win $5,000 in tuition disability scholarships who suffer from autism. Applicants will be screened based on a strong background in civil rights activism, a commitment in working in an inclusive fashion, and building up of the the Autistic cause in their college – all for Autistic people. November 15th is deadline yearly.

American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation Disabilities Scholarships for Graduate Students

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation offers up to (15) scholarships, $ 5,000 each, for students enrolled full time in graduate study in a communication sciences and disorders program in the US. Two each will be awarded for minority, international, and NSSLHA students. It appears that this award does NOT need applicants to have a disability to apply; but asking them first would be advisable before applying.

The ASHFoundation started in 1946, is a charitable organization that supports the advancement of knowledge in the field of communication sciences and strives to assist the lives of people with hearing, speech and language disorders. Its estimated that 49 million Americans are affected with a speech-language-hearing disorder of some kind.

Bella Soul Disabled Scholarships

The Bella Soul Yow Sibling disability scholarships are for full time students who actively participates in taking care of their sibling with a physical ailment, physical disease, and/or physical disability – ie. suffering with some type of chronic illness or physical disability. Not based on GPA. Applicants are to write a three page double spaced essay about what it’s like taking care of a sibling afflicted with a disease/disorder of some type:

1) Explain day to day routine.
2) Explain what you have learned from your sibling who is confronting a disability?
3) What advice would you give to another individual confronting similar adversity?

Applicants do not have to be suffering from a disability to apply to this scholarship either.

These can be societies as well such as the Multiple sclerosis (MS) society. If you want to find particular disability scholarships search for organizations which provide support for that particular disability because many times they will have a educational award you can apply to on their website.

There are too many of them and new ones come out every year. They list the larger high profile ones that have been around for awhile, but the under the radar awards don’t get mentioned. This is where the student themselves has to do the digging using the internet to uncover them.

The Gavalas Kolanko Foundation awards scholarships for students with physical disabilities. They are public charity established to help disabled students reach their secondary educational objectives. They do this by their disability financial aid.

They direct their awards to South Carolina undergraduates who want to attend the College of Charleston, Charleston Southern University, The Citadel, Trident Technical College, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), and the Art Institute of Charleston who have some type of physical disability, such as sight, movement, or hearing.

They have five applications based on student academic direction & college desired with various deadline & submission dates.

Michigan Cerebral Palsy Achievements and Abilities Scholarship for Students with/or Affected by Cerebral Palsy

This disability scholarship was established to create awareness about cerebral palsy (CP) and to honor the achievements of those directly effected by CP. One disability financial aid award of $1,500 is given out yearly to an undergraduate, or graduate student afflected with CP; or a family member who has CP. Deadline is end of July.

Michigan Cerebral Palsy Attorneys are Michigan based attorneys who specialize almost exclusively on cerebral palsy and birth injury cases.

Craig H Neilsen Scholarship Fund for Students with Disabilities

Offered by the University of Utah, these scholarships for students with physical disabilities are for those students who suffer with a spinal cord injury and whose educational direction is business related, or law. Entering freshmen through continuing undergraduates can apply, and there are no state residency requirements. The award is for $7,000.

The DREAM Institute HEAP Scholar Award Scholarship for Students with Physical Disabilities

These awards are for those who will be attending a college in Oaklahoma full time with a physical, or learning disability.

Scholarships are based on financial need and based on two and four year educational programs.

The DREAM Institute is a tax exempt organization whose mission is to help those with disabilities fulfill their life purpose via the educational experience for students with a disability. They do this by academic & professional mentor-ship, academic assistance and through scholastic awards.

Marianjoy Scholarship Program

Since 1994 $750,000 in scholarships for students with a physical disability have been awarded from the Marianjoy Foundation.

Students who apply can attend any college in any field of study too.

Students are selected based on financial need, past leadership & community participation, goals they have towards education & career, and their physical disability they presently have.

The NAF sponsors the “The Claude S. Weiler Scholarship for Amputee College Students”.

High school students looking to study technology in a college or vocational school with any disability having financial need, with a 3.00 GPA may apply.

Hal and Phyllis Wochholz Endowed Scholarship/Fellowship for Undergraduate and Graduate Students Majoring in Engineering at MSU

This award’s objective is to recognize engineering students who are undergraduate as well as graduate Michigan residents. To apply students must have a physical or sensory disability. This is a full tuition disability scholarship that spans 4 years where students must complete an engineering degree along with an acceptable GPA.

Dr. Hy & Myra Shapiro Spartan Advantage Scholarship for Disability Students

Those disabled students who are deaf or hard of hearing automatically get consideration for this award upon applying to MSU. To apply you must show financial need and strong GPA. This will be renewed yearly upon meeting academic standards.

The Charles & Philippa Webb Endowed Scholars Award for Disability Students

Must be an undergraduate enrolled in elementary or secondary education fields of study and have a documented disability that requires academic support related to their disability beyond whats required by law, and registered with the RCPD.

Through the Looking Glass Scholarships for Disabled Students

Through the Looking Glass Scholarships for students with disabled parents is aimed specifically at students whose parents are disabled in one way or the other, and they face financial challenges in enjoying good college education. 15 different $1,000 disabilities scholarships are normally awarded every year. The scholarships are awarded under Through the Looking Glass’ National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families. There are usually different scholarship requirements available for college students and also for high school seniors.

High school seniors:
 The student has to be a high school graduate or if they are graduating seniors. You should also have plans to go through a 2-4 year college system in the fall semester either under an AA, BS or BA degree. Besides that, at least one of your parents must be disabled.
College students:
You need to be enrolled in a 2-4 college process, pursuing a BA, BS or an AA degree. As at March 11th of the year you are applying, you must be 21 years of age or younger, and also have at least one parent disabled.

The selection criteria for the scholarships for disability normally consider the academic performance, community service and most importantly a good letter or recommendation.

AAHD Disabilities Scholarship Program

The American Association on Health and Disability is “dedicated to improve overall health and reduce health disparities for people with disabilities through health promotion and wellness” They offer a scholarship program called the AAHD Frederick J. Krause Scholarship on Health & Disability (2014-2015).

This scholarship program is normally awarded on an annual basis to students who show promise in their academics but suffer some form of disability.

The student should either be going through an undergraduate program or a graduate program in an accredited university. The students should also be pursuing an education in a course related to health and disability, which can be anything from health promotion, public health, disability studies, disability research, rehabilitation engineering and any other course that impacts on the lives of those with disabilities.

The scholarship award is at most $1,000, and is only awarded to students who are legal residents in the US or those who have been enrolled in a US university that is accredited. It is important to note that when you apply for this scholarship, you are granting AAHD permission to use your name, picture or story for future use in reference materials.

1800 Wheelchair Scholarship

The 1800 Wheelchair scholarship has been around since the year 2006, and is awarded every other year. This is a general scholarship that is awarded to students who should be at least 16 years of age.

The students must also have been registered in an accredited university, college or high school. The scholarship award of $500 is presented to applicants who have a good academic standing, and in particular those students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or its equivalent. To be eligible for this award, you do not need to have any particular disability, all are encouraged to apply.
