Rehabmart.com Disability Scholarships

Rehabmart.com that are worth looking into because there are multiple awards given out yearly which increases the chances of winning. Rehabmart.com has established a $25,000 scholarship fund for students with disabilities, and for students pursuing a college degree in a health sciences/healthcare-related field, along with students pursuing special education degrees.

Rehabmart is owned and operated by Occupational and Physical Therapists who also happen to be parents of disabled children. They have designed their Scholarships to promote awareness to the cause of making higher education accessible for students living with disabilities. Rehabmart.com strongly feels that this is a way for them to give back, while at the same time showing their gratitude for the healthcare, health sciences and special education professions.

In 2016 there were 35 Rehabmart scholarship winners from a pool of 900 applicants who responded. This was the very first year that the scholarship was offered by Rehabmart.

Students can apply online for a chance to win from $250 to $2,500 by writing a short thoughtful essay about this question posted on their scholarship website page:

“What medical device, technology, or therapeutic technique do you believe has made the biggest difference in the life (or will make in the future) of a disabled adult or child? Tell us what your chosen device / technology / technique is, and explain how it has/will make a difference”.

The essays most considered are ones which have 250 or more words in them, and are clear, concise, and informative biographies having pertinent material such as how applicants overcame their own physical & mental challenges, what extra-curricular activities they participate in, what causes they volunteer for, and alternative ways that people are helping others.

Students with a disability of ANY major can also apply too for a chance at winning one of the awards; and not just health science students and special needs education. There will be multiple disability scholarships given out to those qualified fitting the scholarship criteria. The deadline date for all submissions is May 31st.

Axon Optics Migraine Story Scholarships for Disability

Axon Optics has a $1,000 disability scholarship for students affected in one way or another by migraine. Any full time student can apply too. To apply, applicants must submit an essay with no more then (300) words, OR a video less then one minute, OR an image such as a drawing or photograph, or similar: on answering ONE of these questions:

1) What is your migraine story?
2) What is your light sensitivity story?

This MUST be submitted on the applicants social media account!

This past year’s submission deadline has just passed (November 30th) , but you can apply for next year.

Axon Optics is a provider of eyeglasses and contact lenses that block the wavelengths of light shown to reduce light sensitivity & migraines. They assist hundreds of individuals who suffer with this incurable debilitating illness. It is estimated that over 10% of the population suffer from migraine headaches and it has become the eighth most disabling illness in the world today.

ASAN Autistic Scholars Fellowship Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities

Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) is a non-profit organization run by and for Autistic people. It was started for the disability rights for the Autistic community. They work for Autistic public policy changes, cultural activities, information, education, and advocacy relevant Autistic projects.

Up to six students have a chance to win $5,000 in tuition disability scholarships who suffer from autism. Applicants will be screened based on a strong background in civil rights activism, a commitment in working in an inclusive fashion, and building up of the the Autistic cause in their college – all for Autistic people. November 15th is deadline yearly.

American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation Disabilities Scholarships for Graduate Students

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation offers up to (15) scholarships, $ 5,000 each, for students enrolled full time in graduate study in a communication sciences and disorders program in the US. Two each will be awarded for minority, international, and NSSLHA students. It appears that this award does NOT need applicants to have a disability to apply; but asking them first would be advisable before applying.

The ASHFoundation started in 1946, is a charitable organization that supports the advancement of knowledge in the field of communication sciences and strives to assist the lives of people with hearing, speech and language disorders. Its estimated that 49 million Americans are affected with a speech-language-hearing disorder of some kind.

Bella Soul Disabled Scholarships

The Bella Soul Yow Sibling disability scholarships are for full time students who actively participates in taking care of their sibling with a physical ailment, physical disease, and/or physical disability – ie. suffering with some type of chronic illness or physical disability. Not based on GPA. Applicants are to write a three page double spaced essay about what it’s like taking care of a sibling afflicted with a disease/disorder of some type:

1) Explain day to day routine.
2) Explain what you have learned from your sibling who is confronting a disability?
3) What advice would you give to another individual confronting similar adversity?

Applicants do not have to be suffering from a disability to apply to this scholarship either.

AMBUCS scholarships for people with disabilities have some nice health therapy awards for those students looking for help to pay for their college. Going back to 1955 AMBUCS  have been granting disability students money for college.

AMBUCS is a not for profit service organization devoted to building mobility & independence for disabled people.This is all accomplished by performing numerous community service projects in order to improve the lives of people with disabilities, equiping them with AmTryke therapeutic tricycles allowing disabled people to get around in there own specialized disability bike, and awarding scholarships to therapy students in their junior senior year of a bachelor’s degree program, or a graduate program leading to a master’s or doctoral degree.

AMBUCS presently has 5,500 members in 130 chapters in over 30 states! If your a AMBUCS member you have access to professional, service and social benefits.

There are National Programs and Committees which ensure that members are all properly represented in all geographic locations.

National conferences are also held once a year where presidents are elected in keeping with their charter rules.

Research Opportunities are also available from AMBUCS and AmTryke LLC in regards to research on the AmTryke therapeutic tricycle along with its accessories as a starting point for a graduate-level research project.

AMBUCS Disabilities Scholarships Highlights

Over the years, 8 million has been awarded to 14,495 students looking for degrees in occupational therapy, physical therapy, hearing audiology, and speech pathology & audiology.

Each year $150,000 is given out in scholarships for disabled people.  Awards range from $500 to $1,500, although one $6,000 grant is presented to a student to use over two years.

To apply; one must be in an accepted in an accredited program by the appropriate health therapy profession authority in any of the above mentioned fields of study.

Being a US citizen and financial need, commitment to community, character for compassion & integrity along with career plans are taken into consideration for the AMBUCS Disabilities Scholarships.

Applications can be turned in between February 18th – April 15th each year.

Foundation for Science and Disability Grants Scholarships

The FSD started in 1975 for non-profit in order to further the cause of scientist who where disabled into society and the scientific community while at the same time working on lowering obstacles that hold back for those with disabilities. The goal is to help disabled people go far in their scientific careers because they have much to offer to science and our society.

The Student Award Program of FSD is geared towards science, technology, engineering, pre‑medical/dental fields, and mathematics. They are for professional or graduate students afflicted with a disability.

It does not have to be a particular disability either. It’s called the Science Graduate Student Grant Fund and you can apply if you’re in your fourth year of college. The award is $1,000 for disabled students accepted into a professional or gradute school with a field of study of Engineering, Mathematics, Science, Medicine, or Technology.

Offers $1,000 scholarships for a student with ANY disability who is an undergraduate. Apply even if you feel your condition is not considered fully disabled. You must be a US citizen an attending college that is accredited, a minimum 3.0 GPA with one completed semester at an accredited university or college. A very good starting point for any student who is disabled is to go to the government disability website which will have lots of information for disability student financial aid. You can go to disability.gov and click on the “Education” link, or go to: government disability student scholarships and financial aid. Some of the below are ones to look into.

The United States Senate Youth Program

Started in 1962 by a US Senate Resolution, this program is for high school students going to college to study history and political science. $5,000 is awarded for undergraduate studies. Two students from each state are selected get to spend 1 week in Washington on the front line to see in person with their own eyes how government operates. Students will see Senators speak, cabinet members and Officials from the Department of State, Defense directors and sit in on a meeting with the US Supreme Court. All your expenses will be fully paid for too, with no out of pocket cost to the winners!

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)

The HRSA is an “agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for improving access to health care by strengthening the health care workforce, building healthy communities and achieving health equity. HRSA’s programs provide health care to people who are geographically isolated, economically or medically vulnerable”.

This is a valuable resource in helping with student financial aid in the health professions field – which is an excellent field of study for anyone today. Scholarship programs come from the National Health Service Corps, NURSE Corps Scholarship Program and Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students.

They not only have scholarships, they have a multitude of educational health related loans to help students pay for fields of study in the medical profession. When scholarships aren’t an option, then loans can be the only thing left to help students pay for college.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is now offering an Undergraduate Scholarship for health students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Scholarship applicants must be committed to pursuing a career in behavioral, biomedical, and social science health-related research. The NIH Scholarship program offers health scholarship support, paid research training at the NIH during the summer, and paid training and employment at the NIH upon graduation. It a great disability scholarship.

NIH scholarships for health will pay up to $20,000 per academic year in educational expenses, tuition and living expenses to health scholarship recipients. Each scholarship is awarded for a period of one year and can be renewed for up to four years. Scholarship recipients must commit to two service obligations at NIH.

The first service commitment involves a 10-week summer laboratory experience following each year of scholarship support. The lab experience takes place at an NIH research laboratory. Each scholar is assigned to an NIH postdoctoral fellow and researcher who will serve as mentors to the scholar. Scholars will also attend seminars and participate in a number of other programs during the summer lab experience. The second commitment involves full-time employment at an NIH research laboratory following graduation.

Scholarship recipients must serve one year of full-time employment for each year of scholarship assistance. Online applications open in mid-October. The final application deadline for the NIH scholarship program is February 1st.

The NIH scholarship program is sponsored by the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education, which is a division of the Office of Intramural Research. It is the Office’s mission to enhance the training experience of fellows and students at all NIH campuses. To meet this goal, the Office works closely with training offices in NIH Institutes and Centers.
